Holiday Inn Montreal September 5, 2008

Looking for a hotel in Montreal? We’ve learned that the Holiday Inn Montreal Midtown (a five-minute walk from our venue) still has rooms available for $129/night with our group discount.

Call the hotel directly at 1(800)387-3042 (or +1(514)842-6111). Ask for Reservations and mention “Design Engaged” to get the special rate. They’re only offering us this rate until September 10.

Sold out! September 4, 2008

We’re officially sold out! We hope you’re as excited as we are by our final group.

Remember, presentation topics are due by September 7. We’re limiting how many talks we do this year, so we won’t be able to fit you in unless we hear from you by the 7th. If this is your first DE and you aren’t giving a talk, you may find yourself involved in other ways. ;-)

We’ll update our Schedule with speakers and topics shortly after September 7.

Schedule Information August 30, 2008

We’re just barely over a month away from Design Engaged, and we’re getting very close to our final list of participants.

Stay tuned for all the logistical details you’ll need, but please take a quick look at our current schedule (this is an embedded Google Calendar, if you can’t see it, visit the Design Engaged website.)

Here are some important details:

  • Click on the 1st entry in the calendar below for more information about our venue, the UQAM Coeur des Sciences “Salle de Diffusion”
  • We start promptly at 9:00am on October 3, please plan to arrive a bit before that.
  • We’ll finish at 5pm on October 5 so people can catch evening flights.

Time to think about your presentations August 11, 2008

Just sent out this email to everyone that’s registered so far.

One of the best things about DE is that it’s small enough that everyone participates. In the past, we’ve asked everyone to give a short presentation. This year, we’re going to relax that rule just a bit to make little more time for conversations. Here’s the deal: we’re asking all our first-time participants to plan to definitely give talks. Everyone else, if you’d like to give a 20-minute talk during Day 1 or 2, let us know and we’ll make it work.

Talks can cover anything you like. We encourage you to use this as a chance to show prototypes or rough drafts, or work in progress. If you’re looking for ideas, use this as an opportunity for reflecting on your practice: what do you know in 2008 that you didn’t know five years ago? How are you using design practices in other roles, like managing employees or running a business?

Presentation topics are due by September 7 using the Contact link above. Thanks!

DE Hotels! July 22, 2008

We’ve been investigating lodging options for DE 2008 and have created a map of the nearby hotels.
Please check it out!

We are pleased to announce preferred rates at the following 3 hotels:

  • The Opus Hotel - “provides a unique boutique experience blending modern design with a nod to history in chic Montreal style.” $199 / night, mention “Design Engaged” to get the preferred rate
  • Holiday Inn Montreal - Midtown (1.800.387.3042 or +1.514.842.6111, ask for Reservations) - “Canada’s largest Holiday Inn” $129 / night — mention “Design Engaged” to get the preferred rate
  • Hotel Casa Bianca - “Beautiful place, and old house on one of the most sought-after streets to live on.” Rates from $119-$239 per night. They couldn’t block the rooms for us so if you’re interested please act fast. If we book all 4 we’ll get an additional 15% discount. Be sure to tell them “Boris sent you” when you book!

If you’re looking for more (or cheaper) options, Tablet has a great list of recommendations.

Welcome July 3, 2008

We’re excited to invite you Design Engaged 2008!

A lot’s happened since 2004, when we held the first Design Engaged. Since then, friends of DE have written books, had work in MOMA, founded companies, earned PhDs, not to mention gotten married, and had babies. DE2008 will be a chance to take stock and consider our values, practices, and goals, and how we now view some of the problems and challenges ahead of us. As in years past, DE2008 will be small, invitation-only, and a lot of fun.

The important details:

WHERE: Coeur des Sciences, Montreal, Canada

WHEN: October 3-5, 2008 (Friday-Sunday)

HOW MUCH: $400 (US) per person. This covers registration, lunch each day, and a group dinner Saturday night. We’ll have some funds available to help cover costs for students—please let us know if we can help bring you to Montreal!

We’ll send details about hotels and presentation programming closer to the event, and we’ll be posting the latest news and logistics info on this site. Subscribe to the feed for updates.

We look forward to seeing you!
